Research Paper Outlines

Research paper outline is a brief plan of your work, which presents a list of your research work ideas.

Some students think that creating research paper outlines is an extra work, which should not be necessarily done. But we can assure you that the outline of a research paper is really important.

The reasons why the outline of a research paper is necessary:

  • Outline of a research paper will help you organize your research work.
  • Outline of a research paper provides a plan of the paper.
  • Outline of a research papers is often required by teachers.
  • Outline of a research paper makes writing a research paper much easier.

But your research work’s outline has to be effective. There exist four significant components of the effective research paper outline:

  • The first significant component of a research paper outline: every heading has to stick to a parallel structure. It means that if the first word of one of your headings is a verb, then the first words of another headings also have to be verbs; or if one of your headings begins with a gerund, another headings also have to begin with gerunds.
  • The second significant component of a research paper outline: information contained in the first heading has to have the same significance as the information contained in the second one.
  • The third significant component of a research papers outline: information contained in the heading has to be general, while the information contained in the subheading has to be more specific.
  • The forth significant component of research paper outlines: each chapter should be divided at least into two subsections.

Outline of a research paper should include:

  • Title page, which should present the topic of your research paper and attract your reader’s attention;
  • Introduction, which normally settles the main goals of your research paper. The other functions of the introduction include keeping reader’s attention and saving something interesting for the main body.
  • Main body, the part of a research paper, where the main information is presented. While describing this part in your research paper outline, you should not use complete sentences. Express only the general meaning. State your ideas in a logical order.
  • Conclusion, the part of a research work, which presents the results of your research. It should be sharp and up to the point.

Even if your teacher does not require writing an outline of your research paper, you had better do it. Remember that you write a research paper outline not for the teacher, but for yourself.
